In 2003 Ian Blackman and Chris Spargo formed BlackmanSpargo.

Both of them had worked in a provincial law firm and specialised in rural and commercial law.

They felt the need to provide legal advice specific to the unique needs of businesses in the rural sector, especially the dairy industry. The decision to form their own specialist firm was made after realising that providing a broad range of general legal advice no longer met the requirements of their rural clients.
