Calving, artificial insemination and harvesting are times when teamwork is essential.  The workload is intense, but when everyone pulls together things run smoothly.  What happens when team dynamics break down - when behaviour on farm doesn’t reflect expected values, or safety protocols aren’t being followed?

As an employer, it’s your responsibility to lead with clarity, fairness, and consistency.  Here are some tips for how to manage behavioural challenges effectively, especially during high-pressure times.

Recognise the Signs Early
Issues such as lateness, unsafe practices, especially around handling stock or equipment, or disregard for farm policies can quickly impact staff morale and safety.

Create Space for Conversation
Before taking any formal steps, give your employee a chance to respond.  A respectful, two-way conversation can often resolve misunderstandings or uncover deeper issues.  Schedule a private chat, be specific about the behaviour or concern and allow space for an open response.

Act Promptly and Fairly
Timeliness matters.  Raising an issue weeks after it occurred is rarely helpful and can feel unfair to the employee.  Refer to your farm’s policies and the relevant employment agreement for specific timeframes and seek legal advice for clarity if you are unsure.  Keep records of discussions and agreed actions.  If the issue is serious or ongoing, follow your disciplinary process.

Lead With Your Farm’s Values
Your farm’s values should guide every decision, and reinforcing expectations regularly, especially during busy times, can help keep the team on the same page.

Plan Ahead
Build in support systems with regular team check-ins.  It is also important to focus on staff nutrition and recovery.  Having a plan in place for managing conflict or performance issues can minimise stress if something does arise.
