Our History

The firm’s expertise in rural law is unparalleled in New Zealand.

Ian Blackman and Chris Spargo practiced law in a large provincial law firm in Rotorua. In 2003 they came to the realisation that rural work is specialised and requires expert advice.  Acting for farmers gave them the most fulfilment. The clients with whom they formed the closest relationships were farming families. They liked and respected farmers’ down-to-earth approach.

This led Ian and Chris to a decision, which many considered to be foolhardy at the time, to create a new law firm committed to the rural sector and to farming families. They formed BlackmanSpargo in 2003 and have been going from strength to strength ever since.

Sandy Van Den Heuvel and Rachel Petterson followed Ian and Chris to BlackmanSpargo but were in other roles.  With the support of Ian and Chris they both completed their law degrees and became owners and directors in 2015, resulting in a business that is built to last and which will span generations of farming families.
